Fellow Crusaders,

June means summer and summer means cold beers, cookouts, and time spent near cool lakes and beaches, right? Well, yes it does and those are good things -- but June also means that we are that much closer to July and then August and that means the kickoff of another season of Crusader football. On that note, yes indeed, life is good and hope springs eternal.

1. Thank you to all those who came out to make May 31st a fabulous day of golf and friendship among the Crusader Football Family at Blackstone National.

Glenn Verrette, Brian Doherty, Curt Bletzer, and Mike Ripp, all from the class of 1980 came in first in what was a closely contested outing with nobody getting hurt or embarrassed.

I want to especially thank all those who sponsored the outing, provided items for the silent auction, and were involved in heavy recruiting of participants.

These include: Jim Grogan (lunch), Mark Cannon, Brendan Devlin, Peter George, Jack Lavalette, Don Maloney, the Class of 1993 in honor of Chris "Hoss" Bodanza, Mark Heinzelman, Chuck Doyle, Jeff Wiley, John Ahern, John Nugent, Bob Hurley, Mike Guilfoile, Ted Duffy, Curt Bletzer, Craig Cerretani, and Greg Draddy. (please accept my apology if I have overlooked anybody)

2. The 2013 Ring of Honor inductees will be John Turco '52, Tom Greene '59, and Dave Quehl '76.Congratulations to these great Crusaders as well as to all those who have been nominated for this honor.

This will be the fourth year of this fabulous program that not only celebrates the individuals so distinguished but all those who are and have been connected to Holy Cross Football throughout its history.

Given the number of greats not yet honored but certainly deserving, we will be hanging the names of many more individuals along the inside wall of the stadium at Fitton Field for years to come. That is a very good thing.

In regard to the date of the ceremony, as alluded to by Coach Gilmore at the golf outing, look for an announcement very soon in which Holy Cross will once again make an historic first, that being, the first ever kickoff of a Saturday evening football game when the Cross takes on Monmouth with a 6pm kickoff on 9/21.

I can picture the "Field of Dreams" effect as the aforementioned honorees or representatives thereof walk to midfield  to accept their honor. SAVE THE DATE and make plans to be with us in The Woo that afternoon and evening!!

3. For those in or around New York City, Coach Gilmore will be in town next Monday evening June 17th for a coach's reception along with our men's and woman's lax coaches and men's hockey coach. The  reception is from 6-8pm at The Public House Monday, 140 E. 41st Street.

Come together with many of the HC Football faithful and get your fix on what scholarship football returning to the Patriot League means in terms of recruiting and scheduling, along with the prospects for this upcoming season. Please RSVP to Jennifer Whipple no later than Wednesday, June 12 by emailcrusaderathletics@holycross.edu or by phone (509-793-3583).

I look forward to seeing you there.

4. Congratulations to Gary Acquah and Mike Fess on being selected as co-captains for the 2013 Crusaders.

5. Disappointed but not surprised to hear that with scholarship football returning to Worcester and the Patriot League that after the games played between HC and Harvard over the next couple of years that the Crimson have decided to look elsewhere rather than continuing to play the Purple.

Reports of Harvard currently negotiating between Simmons and Wellesley to fill the open slot on their schedule are unconfirmed at this time. Additionally, reports that Harvard may be looking to change their color and moniker from The Crimson to The Yellow are also unconfirmed and could only be classified at this time as rank speculation or rumor.

We will report in future newsletters as to any developments we hear on these fronts.

6. On a more serious note, the end of June also means the close of another year to the Crusader Athletic Fund. I would hope that anybody on this distribution who has not yet joined the ranks in supporting Holy Cross Football would do so today by making a gift . . . today.

Our commitment to excellence is measured in so many ways but certainly one of those is in terms of the number of donors to the Gridiron Club.

Give what you can but please give. Your gift -- regardless of size -- is deeply meaningful to all those who are committed to helping Holy Cross Football win on and off the field. You can give via this link right here . . .right now. After you go on that hyperlink, proceed along and then you can direct your gift to the Gridiron Club by utilizing the hyperlink entitled "Click Here for Other Giving Options."

I thank you and on that note . . .

LET's WIN!!
